According to my experience, our world is polluted more than our mother nature could handle. But I believe that if we could change ourself then we can change the thoughts of a whole society. And by doing those Cleanups I believe more and more people will be joined hands together and most importantly people will be get educated about the importance of being environmental friendly.

Let's Start

At first, I must say if anybody wants to do a cleanup even by himself I hope reading my words will help you to do it in a better way!. What I have described in this BLOG is for the people who are organizing the CLEANUP as a group work to involve many people as much as possible. And considering the current trend for the CLEANUPS, I hope this post will come in handy.

And also every factor I mentioned here is the experience I gained from the taking part in a set of Volunteering events and I do believe that this BLOG  will greatly help to new Volunteering teams as well.

First of all, There are few things that we need to consider.


Main Factors

Defining  What is the main target of the Cleanup

By defining the main reason and by describing properly to the volunteers it may boost the encouragement of the volunteers and also the number of participants may be increased.

Any legal requirements to be fulfilled

The easiest way is to inform the relevant government authorities of the cleaning area and take clearance to enter the area and do the cleanup without any legal disturbances. The best way is to find the relevant municipal Council or the nearest police station for the clearance

Finding the Best set of Volunteers


There are several sets of Volunteers in the community and they have different likes/dislikes and different definitions towards volunteering. So if the Organizers could find the Volunteers who have the best intentions for cleanups there will be no conflict of interest will be occurred.
Most importantly it doesn't matter the Volunteers from where, what they have done before or are they coming again. Participation is the most Crucial thing in any volunteering event.


Find Sponsorships as much as you could

To do the cleanups always required some amount of financial support. Because a financial support will come in handy in many numbers of occasions. Like

  • To buy tools for cleanups
  • To supply foods
  • For traveling and hotel bookings and many more
As a fact when Volunteering organizations keep spreading their works that have been done it's pretty easy to find the Financial support. But as far as I know according to the current situation in Sri Lankan Volunteering organizations is that even the funding is good but they in lack of helpful hands.

What kind of Garbage is looking to fetch


It's important to know what kind of garbage will be available in the cleanup area. If it's a known then planning will be easier because organizers can prepare for it.

As an example, if we already knew that the area is filled with Glasses then the volunteers should be equipped with safety boots and the safe pair of gloves which pieces of glasses couldn't penetrate. And also thick garbage collecting covers to hold the collected glasses and also they can contact a Glass recycling company and hand it over to them.

According to this source, there are five types of garbage

  1. Liquid Waste
  2. Solid Rubbish
  3. Organic Waste
  4. Recyclable Rubbish
  5. Hazardous waste

 

Get the Required set of Tools



If the Volunteers decides to do the CLEANUP  by hand it won't be a good idea and the area would be covered is far less. And also even after few hours of work the place won't be looked like it's cleaned. I had this experience and it's a big frustration for all the volunteers and believe me it won't feel good. To find the proper tools for the cleanup, The tools could differ from place to place and the type of garbage is about to collect. And the number of provided tools should be sufficient for participant and volunteers should not be left with empty handed on the CLEANUP day.

 

Plan How To Dispose The Collected Garbage 



This is crucial because if we just dump the collected garbage somewhere, we will be no different from the people who do the environmental pollution. So it's very very important to inform the respective parties who are collecting the garbage and organizers should confirm their arrival to hand over the garbage at end of the Cleanup. And most of the time the collected garbage will be requested to be separated like Glasses, polythene, Plastic Bottles, Food waste should be packed and labeled separately.

Other Factors

Weather Condition

It's depending on the environment where the cleanup is organized. If it's outside then the weather condition is important. If it's a rainy day it would be hard to stand the ground and even if they did the garbage which is collected will be heavier because it mixed with rainwater. And dividing the garbage also will be problematic.

The Geography of the cleaning area

The geography is also an important factor. If the cleaning area is a flat non-slippery surface, then Volunteers no need to worry about it. But in the real scenario, most of the cleanup environments are new places where no any previous information about the safe paths.


On the CLEANUP Day 

  1. If possible talk to the nearest Police station and inform them that a cleanup is about to start from the planned time period.
  2. Start the cleanup early as possible. Because when the Daytime comes volunteers get tired(depends on the area)
  3. Take Photographs before starting the cleanup
  4. Take a small meeting and give a brief about the area to be covered and warn them for any issues that should stay on alert.
  5. And also divide the volunteers and assign the responsibilities to collect garbage separately.

When the CLEANUP is done

  1. Estimate the amount of collected Garbage
  2. Take a photograph of the team and the cleaned place
  3. Properly Hand over the collected garbage to the collectors
  4. Publish your work on the CLEANUP and it will help you to get more volunteers in upcoming events

Important

  • Volunteers should be an example of environmental friendly human beings .
  • Volunteers should not add garbage and should bring only reusable items(eg: shouldn't bring plastic bottles).
  • Try to get the support from people who live around the area. Make them feel these things could be done by anyone and they should not wait until a guardian Angel would come and do it for them
  • Recheck the place again to make sure that you didn't miss any garbage.
  • Only fetch the garbage which is only capable of handling. Do not try to collect garbage which is difficult in handling them. Eg: Big tires, hazardous chemicals, very small pieces of glass

How to Use KeyEventDispatcher() with Multiple JFrames Easily
